Uttarakhand to fund women-managed highway restaurants

on

The ‘Sarai’ will serve subsidized, local cuisines and be managed by exclusively by women self-help groups. Of course, men will be allowed as customers.

A day after the state government opened 14 new Indira Amma canteens to serve subsidized food to people, Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat announced that in order to empower women, state government would open women restaurants known as Sarai on both sides of highways shortly.

The government will identify the locations and will fund these the restaurants, though they will also be controlled exclusively by the women self help groups. Referring to a series of women-related schemes carried out by government to strengthen their monitory conditions, Rawat said after the proper economically viable and secure road side places are located, we will begin the process of building these restaurants to serve subsidized and nutritious food including Garhwali and Kumaoni cuisines in these restaurants too.

The ‘Sarai’ plan is the concept stage. The intent is that will be managed like the Indira Amma canteens. But, as they are restaurants and not Bhojnalaya, their menu will be different.

The Indira Amma canteens serve Garhwali and Kumaoni food, which has increased the demand their unique chapatis made of Jhanghora and desserts made of Jhonghora.
