MUMBAI: After razing unauthorized constructions by restaurants in south Mumbai, the BMC undertook similar action in parts of Khar and Santacruz on Tuesday. H-west ward officials demolished several restaurants operating on footpaths.
Action against encroachments in the ward began a few months ago, with the last big demolitions bringing down several stalls in the Bandra station area.
Three Wise Men and A-1 Falooda were among the well-known establishments that faced action. The BMC freed up the Khar station area of illegal eating joints.
“Some hotels were found operating on the footpath area, which is meant for pedestrians to walk on, and our action is an attempt to free footpaths from encroachments so that pedestrians are not inconvenienced,” assistant municipal commissioner of H-west ward Sharad Ughade said. “At Khar railway station, especially, we have made the passage free for commuters. There were several stalls that were around the station area.”
The BMC plans to continue with such action in the days to come.
