NEW DELHI: In pursuance of a Supreme Court order of December 2016, asking all liquor vends within 500m of national and state highways across the country to be removed in order to control drunk driving and road accidents, the Delhi government has started preparing a list of all such vends which will have to be closed down or shifted by March 31.
While the neighbouring city of Gurgaon is also including places that serve alcohol under the ambit of places that will find themselves in trouble post the March 31 deadline, Delhi’s excise department is so far only focusing on vends.
“At present the excise department is preparing a list of only vends along various highways. Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia has given clear directions that the court’s order be followed strictly,” said a government official.
