Make bars and pubs smoking free zones: Excise department

BENGALURU: The state excise department has ordered that premises with excise permit — bars, pubs and restaurants — be made smoking-free zones.

According to a directive, the step seeks to curb secondhand smoking. As per the Karnataka Protection of Non-Smokers Act 2001, hotels are not allowed to have smoking rooms. Adherence to this rule is also an important consumer right for all passive smokers.

The excise commissioner has, in an order on March 22, 2019, asked officials to ensure all excise-licensed establishments are made smoke-free zones. “In case the licensee has to provide smoking space on the premises, he has to mandatorily take a no-objection certificate from municipal authorities,” it read. Smoking in public places is prohibited under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2013.
