Health-hygiene raids on Mumbai restaurants now via lottery

It will use a lottery system to select restaurants targets for cleanliness and health raids.

Beginning this week, all of Mumbai’s Grade-1 restaurants and star hotels can expect visits from Mumbai municipality’s (BMC) public health department via the new lottery method conducted every Saturday.

While the civic body does conduct routine checks of such hotels but in order to up the vigilance, such a step is being taken said civic officials.

“We do not intend to inform these hotels. Once the lottery would be held on Saturday, the names of the hotels/restaurants to be inspected in the coming week would be kept a secret,” said a civic official.

Civic officials will be inspecting if the properties are running as per the terms and conditions of the licenses issued by the civic body. According to their data, there are 1679 Grade-1 restaurants and 50 starred-hotels in Mumbai.
