The restaurant refuses to sell the 23lb lobster and will instead donate it to nearby Long Island Aquarium.
Weighing in at 23lb, it is a seafood lover’s dream meal. But a giant lobster that has delighted customers at a New York restaurant won’t be served up anytime soon, its owner has vowed. The mighty sea beast, which is nearly 100 years old, has become a tourist attraction at Jordan Lobster Farms in Long Island, with customers flocking to the restaurant to have their photograph taken with it.
“We received it yesterday morning from one of our fisherman, John Price, who’s in the Bay of Fundy. He shipped it in, he didn’t even tell us. He said ‘look in the crate.’ We opened it up and we were like ‘whoa!’,” owner Stephen Jordan said.
He said he has no intention of selling the lobster and will instead donate it to nearby Long Island Aquarium. “It’s almost like a dinosaur. You’d like to see it continue on and I think they would take good care of it,” he added.
His staff are equally delighted with the lobster. Fishermen say it is difficult to know a lobster’s exact age, but estimate Jordan’s crusty discovery to be at least 95 years based on its size and weight.
According to experts, lobsters which live in the deepest parts of the ocean – and are almost never seen with human eyes – can live well beyond 100 years.
