Trial for first restaurant on wheels a success

CHANDIGARH: The trial for first restaurant on wheel was conducted successfully by the Ambala division on UNESCO heritage section of Kalka-Shimla route on Tuesday. For the trial, special engine was used by the division with which the coach was attached and was running on permissible speed on the section.
Sources said that on Sunday, the coach was taken to Shimla and officials found that as thee weight of the coach is sufficient, there is no issue in managing the tables and chairs installed in the coach.

During the trial, there was heavy rain but due to blinds on both the sides, there was no issue of water sip in the coach.

Officials said that the coach is fit to ply on the section and soon it will be handed over to the Ambala division to commence the service.

Dinesh Chandra Sharma, divisional railway manager, Ambala division, said that trial of the coach has been conducted successfully and will be displayed on March 6 at Shimla railway station when Himachal Pradesh’s chief minister Jai Ram Thakur will inaugurate all the development works. He said that the division is yet to take a decision to make this coach available to the passengers.

As per the process, the coach will be handed over to the division which will fix the fare rates and later the coach will be available for booking purposes. To give a restaurant look to this coach, it will open from both the sides so that the passengers can enjoy the scenic beauty during journey on this section. To give a clear scenic view, curtains will be installed on both sides of the coach which will be water proof so that during rainy season, passengers can enjoy their food in the coach.

The coach will be having four tables and set of three chairs with each table which will be installed around the teak pillars of the coach.

Considering the demand of the passengers, this coach will have facility for the dry pantry in which the group of passengers which will book this coach can cook and serve.

The pantry is designed with modern equipment including coffee and tea vending machine and will also have cold storage for processed food, microwave and washing facility of the utensils.
