All-night deliveries become a rage in Millennium City

The night delivery business model is growing rapidly. Many restaurateurs delivering through the night said they cover almost three-fourths of the city.

NEW DELHI: Your 3 am friend need not just be the person at the other end of the phone line. It could well be the food delivery boy, which, as restaurant operators and food delivery app companies are finding out, is delighting them and consumers alike.

All-night food delivery restaurants have become a rage in the Millennium City, which has fewer regulatory restrictions than bigger markets including New Delhi and a business process outsourcing workforce that works late. Gurgaon alone has almost 300 all-night delivery options now and counting.

“Since 85% of our business is home delivery, going forward, we will open cloud kitchens doing only deliveries till 3 am, capturing the midnight to 3 am market,” said Sukriti Singh Rao, director at pizza brand NYC.PIE, a unit of Double AA Restaurants.

Midnight to 3 am is a key market, she said. Of the three stores NYC.PIE operates, the two in Gurgaon offer deliveries till 3 am.

Online fast-food delivery marketplace Dudleys is another firm that is expanding its all-night business, co-founder Chetan Kaul said.

“The all-night delivery business dynamics are such that ticket sizes increase by the evening as Indian consumers tend to spend more on dinner than lunch,” Kaul said. Indians prefer to spend on healthier, working lunches, while dinners are indulgence meals, he said.

The night delivery business model is growing rapidly. Many restaurateurs delivering through the night said they cover almost three-fourths of the city. Most restaurants do not charge extra for late-night deliveries.

“The business model is challenging, but logistically, it is an easier business to operate in,” said Kaul.

The burger chain said it has expanded its business with another brand – Pan Pan – for pizza and pasta-based cuisines.

Delivery apps such as Swiggy recently kicked off late-night delivery services across Gurgaon, working closely with delivery-only restaurants.

Jubilant FoodWorks-run Domino’s Pizza has experimented with all-night delivery in Gurgaon, while startup brand Burger Singh, too, offers all-night delivery
