The city of Mumbai is notorious for its disinterest in voting. In the 2019 Assembly elections, Mumbai recorded a voter turnout of approximately 50.67%, significantly lower than the state average of 61.44%.

As Maharashtra gears up for the highly anticipated Assembly elections on Wednesday, 56 restaurants across Mumbai have announced a 20 per cent ‘Democracy Discount’ for voters dining at their establishments.

This initiative, launched by the Mumbai chapter of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), aims to encourage higher voter turnout. Voters can avail of the 20 per cent discount on their total dine-in bill at participating restaurants on November 20 and 21. To claim the discount, diners need to present their voter ID, confirming their Mumbai residency, along with proof of voting—an inked finger.

In a press release shared on Tuesday, NRAI confirmed the participation of 56 restaurants, including popular names like The Bombay Canteen, O Pedro, Veronica’s, and Bombay Sweet Shop by Hunger Inc; Rahul Akerkar’s Ode and Waarsa; Riyaaz Amlani’s Social and Smoke House Deli outlets; Chrome Hospitality’s Lyla and Eve; Zorawar Kalra’s Pa Pa Ya and Farzi Café; Rachel Goenka’s The Sassy Spoon; and Pranav Rungta’s Nksha, among others.
