New Delhi: National food regulator FSSAI has directed all restaurants in the country to put up food safety display boards in specific formats prominently in their stores by October 15, failing which they may lose their licences.

The order clarifies that display boards need to be printed and displayed at the entrance, reception or billing area of every restaurant.

“Upon non-compliance beyond October 15, 2018, the establishments would attract strict action as per provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006,” the order states. This, it said, was for “awareness of the consumers”.

National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) president Rahul Singh said the FSSAI has been engaging with all stakeholders including the NRAI for rolling out various initiatives on food safety and consumer awareness.

The restaurant association represents close to 6,500 operators.

The restaurant industry, valued at ₹3,09,110 crore, is the third largest after retail and insurance in the services segment, according to the NRAI India Food Services Report 2016.
