Report shows Indian love for North Indian food

on

The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) reveals the eating habits of Indians in a new report. Most Indians eat out during ‘shopping and casual outing’, as well as ‘family outings’.Restaurant-goers opt for North Indian food (28%) over all else, despite the array of international food franchises and cuisines available in many cities.

This is followed by Chinese (19%), South Indian (9%), American (7%) and Pizza/Italian (6.2%), showing how Western cuisine is become more prominent. The report also splits the Indian dining population into four categories to identify their preferences:

  • Family Bonding Seekers (36%)
  • Fun Seekers (25%)
  • Urban Class with disposable income (24%)
  • Socialisers (15%)

The Urban Class, unsurprisingly, is the biggest spender. They prefer casual dining restaurants that serve Italian or Pan Asian food, and spend around Rs. 8,700 in 3-4 times a month.

Fun Seekers spend the least (Rs. 4,500) but eat out or order in most frequently at around 5-6 times a month.

Riyaaz Amlani, President of NRAI, says: “A restaurant today is not just a place for eating. It is a place to socialise, to unwind and more.

“Eating out is no more the rich man’s indulgence. There are options, and people irrespective of economic class go out to eat.”

The NRAI India Food Services Report 2016 is a comprehensive report on the Indian restaurant industry.

It provides detailed information on the industry size and highlights the latest trends, growth and contributions to the economy.

It also draws attention to the opportunities and challenges it faces and suggests solutions to overcome these issues.

Samir Kuckreja from NRAI states the report findings ‘are based on consumer research covering 2,000 people across 20 cities of India, trade research at restaurants, results from in-depth interaction with a variety of companies and meetings with over 50 CEOs’.

With a projected growth of Rs. 4.98 trillion by 2021, the food services market will continue to create ample employment opportunities.

In 2016 alone, the restaurant industry is expected to contribute Rs. 22,400 crore through taxes and put 5.8 million people in work.
