Telangana will draw lots for bar licences, sets new ratios

1:30,000 people for Telangana while 1:13,000 for Hyderabad license. These ratios don’t apply to new licenses for outlets in 3-star & above hotels.

The Telangana government has decided to draw lots to allot bar licences in the State. As against the auction system that used to decide the eligible traders to run bars, the government said it will go for drawing lots to allot licences.

In an order released last week, Ajay Misra, Principal Secretary to the government, said that they would take 2011 Census as the basis for allotment of licences. The order said one licence will be issued for every 30,000 population in municipal corporation, municipalities and panchayats.

But in the capital city region (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation), a licence will be given for every 13,000 people. “New bar licences would be granted to the restaurants run by 3-star and above category hotels without any restrictions (the population criterion),” the order said.

It said the government could relax norms based on the requirements or recommendations made by the Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise.
