BENGALURU: If you are a pet parent in the city and often gulping down your guilt at a restaurant while your dog stares at the food on your table, here’s some good news. Restaurants and cafés are now drawing up meal plans for your furry friends.

Maia, located in Bellandur, is launching one such special canine menu that is curated by canine nutritionist Ishmeet Chandiok. “Bengaluru is a part of an ever-growing pet population. To cater to this, our menu will include treats, meals, ice creams and desserts. All these will be 100% pet-friendly and healthy for the dogs,” says Ishan Shah, co-owner of the café.

Yamika Damani, founder, Clever Canine Pet Food Innovations, introduced a special menu for dogs in 2015 at her family-run patisserie, Spoonful of Sugar. While the menu was made-to-order then and customers had to place an order a day in advance, she now plans to introduce it on a permanent basis.

“We plan to launch Puppychino, a doggie cappuccino minus the caffeine, eggs a la woof and blueberry oats porridge available on a daily basis,” says Damani.

Communications professional Shruthi Gowda, who travels once every month with her eight-yearold boxer Mischa to Damani’s café, says a pet menu is a great way to engage pet parents like her. “I don’t mind spending on travel and the food to visit a café that offers a separate menu because I am particular about what I give my pet.”

Lalit Ashok Bengaluru launched a pet brunch in August last year to test the waters on how it would work for their customers. “We’ve seen an 11% rise in footfalls, since the pet brunch launch. It’s been a very successful initiative,” says Bhaskaran T Menon, general manager. While the treats and menu keep their tummies happy, pets are kept engaged by certified handlers with games and activities.

Bhavana Ramesh Kumar, pet parent to two-year-old golden retriever Cuddles, says menus like these are a boon as they also give an opportunity to socialise with other pet owners and their pets. “If restaurants can have kids menu, it’s time they also pay attention to this segment, as we are willing to spend on our fur babies,” she adds.

Malika Suri, founder at Mimansa@Foxtrot, will be launching an ayurveda-inspired canine menu later this year at her restaurant in Koramangala. “After my pet’s ill health, I found a solution in ayurveda by mixing certain herbs and the way the meals were prepared. That will be the inspiration for our healthy dog snacks and meals menu at the restaurant,” Suri says.
